On Friday 2 August, I booked 2 cycles to hire for Sunday 4 August. At this point, the forecast for Callander was thundery showers with sunny spells and I was told on the 'phone that the bike hire would be fine. When we arrived on Sunday, the forecast was still for thundery showers and sunny spells. There was a yellow weather warning, meaning that we kept an eye on the forecast and made sure we were equipped appropriately. On our arrival, the truculent staff member was extremely unhelpful, first suggesting that we had no booking, then telling us that we couldn't have the bikes because of the weather. His main worry seemed to be that they would get dirty(!) Having driven specially from our home near Edinburgh, we decided to walk part of the route we had planned to ride. On our walk we saw many cyclists, all of whom were coping admirably with the conditions. Having cycled, hiked and camped all over the world, often in much more extreme conditions than are found in Scotland in August, I daresay we would have coped too. The weather – yes, some rain. We managed to deal with it by putting on our waterproofs. In summary, if I could give no stars I would. The staff member on the 'phone was great. The staff member on the day was dreadful, rude and patronising. Refusing to hire bikes out because of rain is unlikely to be a sustainable business model in Scotland!
