Was there with 3/4 in 96 & 98. Sad to see the satellite image of the North East side of the base. My barracks and work building are totally gone. They had just built the work building. Both were right on the beach. Happy times were spent. The buildings may go but the memories are forever.

Craig, I agree with what you said. I was 17 my first tour on Okinawa and took full advantage of being on my own for the first time. I'd heard about the fighting on Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Midway and other places and I thought I knew my WW II history. All I'd ever heard about Okinawa was that there had been a " little bit" of fighting on the island, not that it had been one of the hardest won battles in the whole Pacific campaign. I learned more about what actually happened from the History Channel than I did from two tours there. I wish now I had spent more time learning about the battle of Okinawa rather than what the bars looked like. All in all, I loved it, that's why I went back for my second tour. Semper Fi Marines!

I actually don't mind it this place all that much. A lot of people gripe about the weather and how there's not much to do, and the barracks are old and dirty, but if you go out your way, there's plenty to do around. They have a free green line that runs between all the bases, which is extremely convenient. At night it gets a little backed up, but in the end, you'll get to your destination. On base, they have a chow hall that actually isn't bad, a bowling alley, gym, beaches, and a USO as well. I'll admit that the construction going on is kind of annoying and some of the buildings need some renovating, but with some effort, I think you can make the experience a memorable one!

Bought wireless headphones, they turned out to be garbage, and they simply didn't work right, only one earbud would connect to bluetooth, while the other worked fine. So I tried returning them, but I had thrown away the reciept and box already. They told me there was nothing they can do, and that was it. No store credit, no exchange, no help. I asked a woman who had a tag on her shirt that said "sales clerk" to speak to the manager, and she said that was her and there was nothing that could be done because they didnt have the box or reciept. Tldr: 50 set of non working headphones, "manager" told me I was out of luck.

Although it is very far from anything to do off base it, it has everything you may need. Best time I had in the Corps.

Fun times at "The Rock". A pretty island with lots of stuff to see. It was one of the highlights of my tour of duty. I drove trucks there while serving my overseas duty in the USMC in the 1980's. It was an adjustment period driving on the left side of the road. The food was good on and off base, the drinks were strong, and the locals and jar heads kept you entertained. Semper Fi!
