A beautiful basilica in the center of Trastevere, now a Romanesque building built on the ruins of an ancient church. Inside you will see, among others, 22 ancient columns from the Caracallas Bath and beautiful mosaics from the 12th and 13th centuries.

To Carry An Angel

There is something so peaceful and simple about this church. Ma and me use to walk often from Campo Dei Fiori over to Trastevere and when we did we always took some rest within the comfort of this beautiful Roman church. One of the things we like to do was to light a candle for my brother who is a drug addict and Ma was of course always worried about him. So for the few years I have left to walk about, I will always stop in this church remembering my mother and how much we loved this place together. Sean T

Our Lady in Trastevere, one of the oldest Basilicas in Rome. It hosts beautiful mosaics from the 13th century. The church has a romanesque campanile and it is erected in an large square named after the Basilica, Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. The interiors of the church feature two main naves separated by granite columns.

This is, in my opinion, aside from St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. It’s certainly one of the oldest. The square in front of this Basilica just feels welcoming. The mosaics inside the basilica are breathtaking, especially the ones in the apse depicting Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. A must-visit!

Considered to be one of the oldest basilica's dedicated to our lady (in competition with st Mary major). The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church date back to the 340s, and much of the structure to 1140-43. The first sanctuary was built in 221 and 227 by pope callixtud I. It is know for its massaics and it's rich ceiling.
